Smithville was the initial name, but there was already a town by that name. Therefore it was renamed Blacklick after a local creek.

The Blacklick Post Office (zip code 43004) was previously located within the community but has since relocated to Reynoldsburg-New Albany Road, just south of the community. Jefferson Cemetery, an active cemetery run by Jefferson Township, is in Blacklick.
